U.S. Air Force Member Dies After Self-Immolation at Israeli Embassy

25-Year-Old Protested Israeli Occupation of Palestine

Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old active-duty member of the United States Air Force, has died after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

Immediately before the act, which was live-streamed on Twitch, Bushnell said that he was protesting against the treatment of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

Bushnell, of San Antonio, Texas, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Monday. Investigators are still determining the motive behind his actions, but they believe he had been staying at a Travelodge in Silver Spring, Maryland, which was searched by federal agents on Monday.

Bushnell's death has sparked an outpouring of grief and condemnation, with many expressing outrage at the ongoing violence and human rights violations in Palestine.

A vigil was held for Bushnell outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., on Monday.

Reactions to Bushnell's Death

President Joe Biden issued a statement expressing his condolences to Bushnell's family and friends. "I was heartbroken to learn of the tragic death of Aaron Bushnell," Biden said. "His act of self-immolation is a reminder of the desperate need to find a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also expressed his condolences, saying, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Aaron Bushnell. We condemn any form of violence or extremism and call for peace and understanding between our nations."

However, many activists and human rights organizations have criticized the Israeli government's response to Bushnell's death, accusing it of downplaying the significance of his protest and continuing to suppress Palestinian rights.
